Secrets of a Social Media Expert
My guest was the delightful Mari Smith and I have to say it was a great pleasure to meet such a wonderful kindred spirit. Mari is hailed as the premier Facebook marketing expert and one of the most influential and knowledgeable new media thought leaders in the world. In fact Forbes named Mari as one of the top social media power influencers several years in a row. She is also author of The New Relationship Marketing and co-author of Facebook Marketing: An Hour A Day.
During the show Mari shared many tips about social media and re-iterated how important it is to be using it in your business today. She is truly a raving evangelist for Facebook and her key thoughts were to look at what you are selling or providing and who is your audience. In addition she reminded us to look at the demographics of your customer and use the correct platform.
As an example:
Pinterest – key audience is 30 – 50 year old women (recent stats – five years of loyalty)
Instagram – under demographic, late teens and twenties (this is fastest growing network in 2014)
“Communication is a skill that you can learn. It’s like riding a bicycle or typing. If you’re willing to work at it, you can rapidly improve the quality of every part of your life.”
~ Brian Tracy
Mari ensures that she follows about 50% of the people who follow her on Twitter. She believes this is the most effective way to grow your audience and if you want the key added tips you need to check out the full show.
She suggests that you are active on at least two platforms and to spend at least an hour daily. In addition, if you want to be a centre of influence in your area of expertise you must be consistent with your messages.
Mari says “Content is King, engagement is Queen but she rules the house” simply meaning it is so important to engage with your customers no matter what you are selling, respond to their comments both positive and negative.
“You will never find time for anything. If you want time you must make it.”
~ Charles Buxton
