Attitude is Everything!
Irish man Conor Devine is an entrepreneur, chartered surveyor, author, triathlete, influencer and personal development junky. Struck down with Multiple Sclerosis(MS) whilst on honeymoon, he then spent three very difficult years dealing with it until one day in 2010 something switched in his life and he started to create a plan to get his life back and truly live again.
Conor is an ordinary guy with an extraordinary story to share with the world, despite all the odds.
During the show we touched on many aspects of his life but the key message is ‘attitude is everything’ which is reflected in his book “My Multiple Sclerosis Story”. If you are not familiar with MS it is a neurological condition which affects around 2.3 million people worldwide. Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20-40, but it can affect younger and older people too.
Conor’s message is a simple yet profound one, it is full of passion and compassion, recognizing that although he has found a powerful way to deal with his illness others may not be in such a fortunate situation. He shared his thoughts and puts it down to educating yourself about the illness and his three point plan:
1. Medication – do the research, find the right medication for you, persist with your doctors and consultants
2. Diet and Exercise – nourish your body, mind and spirit with healthy foods and ensure you exercise regularly
3. Mental Attitude – ensure you have a positive attitude, educate yourself about life, continually learn and grow
He dedicates a chapter in the book to the importance of these three things and how he lives daily from this incredible place. We also discussed the importance of having the support of your nearest and dearest, his family and his wife at such a difficult phase in his life and of course the importance of having faith too.
He is a walking, talking example of how by taking control of your life again you can achieve so much. I believe this three step plan can be applied in all our lives not just for those with MS. Consider how you may medicate your life with media, alcohol, diet etc. – are you ready to make that change – why not look at educating yourself instead? Do you nourish your mind, body and spirit? And are you someone with a positive mindset who understands that we can change our lives by changing our environment.
Whatever your challenge in life is right now I would encourage you to read Conor’s book, listen in to this show and understand how by taking control of your mind you can truly achieve anything. Think of it as the three C’s of life, choices, chances, changes – you must make a choice to take a chance or your life will never change!
I leave you with this quote from Walter D. Wintle from “The Man Who Thinks He Can”.
If you think you are beaten,
If you think you dare not,
If you’d like to win
But you think you can’t,
It is almost certain you won’t.
Life’s battles don’t always go to
The stronger or faster man,
But sooner or later the man who
Wins is the man who thinks he can!
